How to Choose a Software Development Company: 8 Questions to Ask

12 May 20265 min readBy Zedindex

Choosing a software development company is one of the highest-stakes purchases a business makes: pick wrong and you lose months and money on software you cannot use. The good news is that a few direct questions reveal most of what you need to know before you sign anything.

Ask about work, not promises

Ask to see live products they built, not screenshots. Ask which parts their team actually delivered and what happened after launch. A company proud of its work will show you running apps and real websites; vague answers here are the loudest warning sign you will get.

Ask who will actually build it

Some agencies sell with senior people and deliver with juniors or subcontractors. Ask who writes the code, who designs the screens, and who your single point of contact is. Small senior teams with clear ownership consistently outperform layered ones.

Ask how they handle scope and change

Requirements always evolve. Ask how changes are priced, how progress is shown, and what a weekly update looks like. Fixed-scope with a discovery phase, visible demos, and honest change discussions is healthy. Everything is possible, no questions asked is not.

Ask what happens after launch

Software needs updates, fixes, and improvements. Ask who owns the code and accounts, what support costs, and how fast issues get fixed. You should own everything: domain, hosting, source code, and data. Walk away from anyone who keeps ownership as leverage.

Ask Zedindex all eight questions; we enjoy answering them. Start with a discovery call and judge us by our live work, not our pitch.
